The MS420 HDMI Matrix Switch connects up to four HDMI sources to two displays and enables particularly flexible AV distribution. For example, two different HDMI sources can be shown on a TV and a projector at the same time, or one source can be displayed on both. With 4K 60Hz, HDR and Dolby Vision you enjoy modern films, series and games in high picture quality. The MS420 also makes different devices work together comfortably: an integrated downscaler allows 4K and Full HD displays to be used together, the audio extractor outputs the HDMI sound separately to sound systems, and via ARC even the TV sound can be returned. With 16 EDID modes you can additionally define which picture and sound formats your HDMI sources should output.
Distribute 4 HDMI sources independently to 2 displays
The MS420 connects up to four HDMI sources such as games console, streaming box, Blu-ray player or PC to two TVs, monitors or projectors. For each HDMI output you can independently select which of the four sources is shown – for example a streaming player on the TV while the games console plays on the projector, or one source on both displays at once, without re-plugging HDMI cables.
4K 60Hz, HDR and Dolby Vision for impressive picture quality
The MS420 supports HDMI signals with a data rate of up to 18 Gbit/s and resolutions up to 4K Ultra HD at 60 Hz. HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision are supported, making the MS420 ideal for modern streaming players, games consoles and Blu-ray players.
Downscaler for using 4K and Full HD displays together
A modern 4K TV and an older Full HD projector can easily be used in one setup. The integrated downscaler can automatically reduce a 4K signal at HDMI OUT B to 1080p, so the 4K TV at HDMI OUT A keeps the original 4K signal while the Full HD projector at HDMI OUT B receives the same picture at 1920 × 1080 pixels. The original refresh rate is retained (4K 60 Hz becomes 1080p 60 Hz, 4K 24 Hz becomes 1080p 24 Hz) and the other signal properties are not changed, so the Full HD display must support the output refresh rate and colour space. PC resolutions such as 2560 × 1440 and 720p are not converted, and Dolby Vision and HDR10+ cannot be converted correctly for Full HD displays – when a 4K and a Full HD display show the same signal, we recommend output in SDR or HDR10.
HDMI audio extractor for two separate audio outputs
The integrated HDMI audio extractor takes the sound of the connected HDMI sources and additionally provides it via separate audio outputs. Each HDMI output has its own optical TOSLINK output and analogue 3.5 mm audio output: TOSLINK A and AUX A output the sound of HDMI OUT A, TOSLINK B and AUX B the sound of HDMI OUT B. For example, the picture can run on a projector while the corresponding sound is played via a stereo system or active speakers.
TOSLINK supports stereo PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS; the analogue AUX outputs are designed for stereo PCM. The MS420 does not convert audio formats, so for analogue stereo via AUX the HDMI source must be set to stereo PCM. If the source delivers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD, the optical output remains silent – in this case set the source's audio output to PCM, Dolby Digital or DTS. Volume is not controlled via the MS420 but directly on the connected sound system, amplifier or active speakers.
HDMI ARC brings the TV sound to the sound system
HDMI OUT A supports the Audio Return Channel (ARC), so the sound of internal streaming apps, the built-in TV tuner or devices connected directly to the TV can be output via TOSLINK A to your sound system – particularly practical if your audio system has no HDMI ARC input but an optical digital input. Connect the TV's ARC-capable HDMI port to HDMI OUT A and activate ARC with the ARC button on the MS420; HDMI-CEC and audio output via HDMI ARC must be enabled on the TV. Depending on the TV model, its built-in speakers are often deactivated automatically.
16 EDID modes for optimal picture and sound matching
EDID tells the HDMI source which video and audio properties the connected system supports. The MS420 offers 16 EDID modes set via four DIP switches: you can adopt the EDID of HDMI OUT A (Mode 1), specify a fixed picture and sound format (Modes 2–13: 1080p, 1920 × 1200p, 4K 60Hz 10.2 Gbit/s HDR10 or 4K 60Hz 18 Gbit/s HDR10, each with PCM 2.0, Dolby/DTS 5.1 or HD Audio), or combine the capabilities of both displays (Mode 14 MIX1: compatible video and audio format; Mode 15 MIX2: downscale for video, highest audio format; Mode 16 MIX3: downscale for video, compatible audio format).
As a guide we recommend Mode 1 for a single display connected to HDMI OUT A, Mode 15 for two different displays combined with a soundbar or another audio system, and Mode 16 when the most compatible picture and sound output on both displays is the priority. The optimal EDID setting always depends on the picture and sound formats supported by all connected devices.
Full HD 3D with two displays
The MS420 supports Full HD 3D video. 3D playback is possible when both connected displays support 3D and a suitable EDID MIX mode is selected; alternatively connect the 3D-capable display to HDMI OUT A and use EDID Mode 1. If one display does not support 3D and a shared EDID is used, the source may disable 3D.
